The upscale SIG Sauer MCX Rattler is a semi-automatic AR-15 type pistol that comes in two versions: MCX Rattler SBR and MCX Rattler PCB. The main difference is the folding butt stock: SBR stands for Short Barreled Rifle while PCB is short for Pivoting Contour Brace. Also the SBR comes in two variants: 5.56 NATO or .300 AAC Blackout ammo. In contrast, the MCX Rattler PCB is only offered for .300 AAC Blackout.

The heart of the MCX Rattler is its hard coat anodized receiver. Rather than use a blowback mechanism, the MCX Rattler uses a shock absorbing gas piston for operations, and there is little recoil.

The PCB’s brace is made of metal and rubber, giving it strength, durability and rigidity while the SBR’s skeletonized hockey stock brace is optimized for weight. Regardless of version, the MCX Rattler’s side-folding braces make the gun easily transportable in a motorcycle police officer’s saddle bag and then quickly assembled into something far more powerful and capable.

The cold hammer forged carbon steel barrel is only 5.5” long, so depending on version, the gun’s overall length is only 23” or 23.5” long. The muzzle thread is 5/8 in - 24 TPI. In .300 Blackout, twist is 1 to 5” while in 5.56 NATO, it’s 1 to 7”. Width is 2.8” due to the volume of the very short M-LOK style alloy handguard. In all guises, height is 8” and weight is 5.1 to 6 pounds.

The MCX Rattlers come standard without sights. However, a Picatinny rail runs the entire length of the top for easy accessory attachments. Just below that at back is the ambidextrous charging handle. The MCX Rattler is fronted by a three-pronged flash suppressor. Behind that is an adjustable gas block that can be set to either suppressed or unsuppressed mode.

Both SBR and PCB Rattlers have fire selectors and magazine releases on both right and left sides, which means that one can fire these guns even with their stocks folded back along the gun’s left-hand side.

MCX Rattler SBRs have a matchlight duo trigger, a two-stage trigger that reduces trigger pull and results in tighter groupings at the firing range. MCX Rattler PCBs have a SIG Enhanced trigger. Both variants have a slim, elegantly styled, organically shaped polymer grip with serrations at front and back.

Finally, the SIG Sauer MCX Rattler comes with a 30 round polymer Magpul magazine.

As an aside, SIG Sauer started as Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (or just SIG, meaning Swiss Industrial Company) in Switzerland in 1853 making railway wagons. Seven years later, it started making arms for the Swiss Army. In 1976, SIG bought Germany’s J. P. Sauer and Sohn and then changed the name correspondingly to SIG Sauer and established its American subsidiary in 1985. All new American-market SIG Sauer guns are designed and manufactured in the United States.
